Circus
Verse 1
Circus is coming to town
To see the circus so far east
A welcome respite from drought
Children's faces filled with glee
Verse 2
Children gather at the town limits
A dust trail in the west
Soon the caravans of colour
Will parade their joyous best
Verse 3
Red vans with bright flowers
Battered trucks with whirling wheels
Happy people waving
Anticipation of what they will see
Verse 4
Faded canvases reach up
Old men pulling ropes high
Their hands calloused and rough
Pulling colours to the sky
Verse 5
Night finally arrives
There is a buzz in the town
Horror of the drought
Is lost with the frowns
Verse 6
Music fills the air
The big top gradually fills
“Children at the front”
The circus master yells
Verse 7
Clowns with painted faces
Crowds laugh and roar
Daredevils on high wire
Audiences can but stare
Verse 8
Acrobats perform so strongly
Trapeze artists up to high
Horses draw gasps and claps
Audience releasing collective sighs
Verse 9
All good things come to and end
Townsfolk smiling as they stroll out
Disaster around forgotten
As they head home to the drought
Verse 10
Performers peel off their facade
Feeling sympathy for the town
Their circus is also dying
Not much longer to be around
